About a week after the passing of the Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, also known as RBG, President Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to succeed Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the United States Supreme Court. Amy Coney Barrett attended Rhodes College and Notre Dame Law School. She is the only current supreme court justice who did not go to an Ivy League law school. At the time of her nomination, she was Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Indiana. This was President Trump’s third time confirming a Supreme Court justice, giving the conservative Republican Party a 6-3 majority in the Supreme Court. Her experience is valuable but other possible nominees would have had more experience, then again, her nomination was likely for her far-right views.
Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination received immediate backlash on many circumstances. Firstly, she was nominated and confirmed less than 2 weeks from Election day, also the fastest nominee to have been confirmed. In 2016 when former President Obama nominated Merrick Garland more than 9 months before the end of his term, Republicans refused to consider the nominee.
Secondly, Amy Coney Barrett is an openly conservative Republican woman who has shown that she may be willing to overturn Roe v. Wade, the case that gives women the protection and ability to choose abortion. She is likely to vote to overturn the Affordable Healthcare Act, which many Americans are dependent on. Amy Coney Barrett has expressed her anti-abortion, pro-wealthy, pro-religious, and anti-LGBTQ+ views. Leading many believe her views will undo all the progress the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought to achieve.
Even during her confirmation hearing, she refused to answer certain questions. She will be deciding the lives of American citizens yet refused to be transparent when questioned.
When the news of the confirmation arrived, politicians including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted “Expand the court.” Court-packing would result in adding more judges, and court reform would aim to improve the quality of justice and efficiency of the judiciary.
Prior to Joe Biden’s election as the 46th President Elect of the United States, he stated this about the action he would take regarding the Supreme Court, “If elected I will put together a national bipartisan commission of constitutional scholars and I will ask them to come back to me with recommendations as to how to reform the court system because it is getting out of wack.”
Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination and confirmation washed the whole nation with worry less than 2 weeks before the Presidential Election Day. Many Americans believe that if President Trump were to take the election results to the Supreme Court, the now 6-3 majority would vote in President Trump’s favor. Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation is a danger to the lives of Americans but especially LGBTQ+ Americans, women, and immigrants.
