“Where are you from?”
The question that made me want to run away one too many times. The question that I once feared. The question that I now gladly embrace. Usually, when I mention that I am Asian, they envision an individual of Chinese, Korean, or Japanese descent. I then have to explain that I am from Sri Lanka, an island-like country off the tip of India in South Asia. I find it fascinating that many people are not aware of or have very little information on South Asia. I am so glad to be given this opportunity on WeUnite to bring shed light on the South Asian background I grew up with.
What is South Asia?
Home to approximately 24% of the world’s population yet covering only 3% of its landmass, South Asia is a portion of Asia that consists of generally 8 countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. These 8 nations are officially a part of an organization called SAARC, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. The culture of these 8 countries largely varies, but there are some similarities when it comes to traditional clothing, jewelry, music, food, and even holidays.
So, why am I here?
In this series of blogs, I wish to communicate with all of you past the stereotypes and explain the significance of the many traditions and beliefs we South Asians follow. I would also like to expand the geography of Asia outside of East Asia to this region of South Asia. As enriching and beautiful South Asian culture may be, the prejudices embedded within it are just as prevalent. South Asia holds on to its conservativeness despite the modernization taking place around it. Because of the many prejudices, especially towards women, that I, a South Asian female, feel the need to address alongside the beauty of my culture. I hope you all look forward to this blog-series!
Note:
I would like to impart that I am a first-generation Sri Lankan-American, hence most of my blogs will be inspired by experiences I’ve personally encountered or topics I found during my research I felt needed to be addressed. Please also mind that most of this information will also come from my parents, both of whom were born in Sri Lanka. I hope you will acknowledge that the information written in these blogs is just a slice of cake and that there is much more to South Asia beyond my blog! I will try my best to bring you all the most accurate information, so please do not be afraid to point out any mistakes!
நன்றி,
Shakthika :)
