There are million personal questions in the world, like how much your salary is or how much you weigh but the question of “When will you have kids?” is overused and too personal for women - and no one talks about it.
This simple yet personal question was first asked to me by my brother, now I have made it clear that I do not plan on having kids simply because that life is not for me. But society seems to think that it is required of every woman on Earth to produce at least one child. Since 1967 the amount of women without children living under their roof has climbed from 56.1% to 71.3% in the age range of 20 to 30 years old. Many women just don’t want kids, and that is perfectly okay! There is no exact definition of what a household or a family must consist of - meaning that women have the right to not want children. This societal norm that is set upon many of our minds and has twisted what we think family planning should consist of. Having kids impacts your entire life and isn’t something to be taken lightly, so the decision is not yours to make but the women it affects.
Now this question isn’t just about personal preference but about deeply personal reasons. It could vary from infertility problems to other health problems. Many women can feel ashamed and keep their struggles with fertility a secret and this emotional rollercoaster can be devastating to a woman.
There is one easy solution to this, just don’t ask. Even though this question may have the best intentions just keep them to yourself. Let women control their own life stories.
